About Rachel

Hi, I’m Rachel, I’m 28 and born and raised in Cardiff. I’ve definitely gone through the paces, tried every role you could think of and I’m slowly finding my place. I’ve worked in the sports industry since starting my first degree in 2016. I’ve been a content creator, camera operator, production engineer and now a live director. I’ve done it all. Although, it might look easy from the outside it’s been a tough road. Being a woman in a male dominated industry has been hard. I’ve learnt to grow a back bone, ignore sexist remarks and prove each person wrong. I’ve built respect for myself in a place there wasn’t and built a safe working community wherever I’ve been. As an engineer I lead streaming production teams across the UK and Europe for darts, snooker and Nineball pool. As a live director I’ve directed broadcast snooker events, PDC streaming events and world wide Nineball pool events. All I hope to do is to prove to myself and others that I belong. To prove to the next generation of women in sports media that you can do whatever you put your mind too.

The journey

I started my journey into sports media at the age of 18. I was actually determined to not go into sport. I was very aware it was a male dominated world and I wasn’t sure how I’d fit in. But I fell into it quite easily, my knowledge and passion for sport helped me in my career and I’m lucky to have had so many supporters who pushed me to be better. I completed my first freelance role in February 2018 where I traveled to Sweden to cover the Champions Hockey League Final. Creating content, interviewing players, it grew from there. For three years following that I became the only female member of the team. With the confidence that came from travelling Europe and completing that role I looked to pursue another dream, a masters in Sport Broadcasting. I decided to focus on directing live sport. The thrill and adrenaline of live sport is what drives and excites me, but all journeys have bumps in the road. My directing journey came to a hold as Covid hit. In 2021, I took a job as a production engineer. I wasn’t trained in engineering but learnt on the job. This not only was a challenge in itself, but navigating a world in which I wasn’t respected in was also difficult. Taking on this role was so rewarding for myself and helped me grow as an individual. Although, there’s only so many years someone can do what they’re not trained to do or love. Last year I was given the opportunity to change departments and pursue my career in directing. Now, I’m a respected live director in Matchroom where I’m given the chance to direct broadcast snooker as well as darts, nineball pool and boxing.

Why your vote matters

Why vote for me? It's a good question, and I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I've done and how I got here. I got to where I am with passion, determination and not accepting defeat. For anyone who's worked in Sport, you know it's fast paced, adrenaline riddled and a very male dominated sport. This didn't deter me, it encouraged me to do my best and get as far as I can. With support, belief and a big push, I've now got to where I am. To be being a Live Director at Matchroom. I literally am the definition of starting at the bottom. I started at Matchroom as a freelancer. I took a full time role as an engineer in 2021 and have built my way up, changing paths a fair few times. But hard work pays off and I hope to show others it's worth it. What does your vote mean to me though? In all honesty, more than words can express. I've always been my biggest critic, I'll always see the mistakes, even if they're the slightest thing. I am a perfectionist in every form, so knowing that someone has seen how hard I work and how much pressure I put on myself to do well, it's overwhelming. Thank you all.
